Allspice
Scientific name: Pimenta officinalis
Local name: Jamaica pepper, kurundu, myrtle pepper, pimento, newspice
Primary constituents: Eugenol, Vitamin A, C, B1, B2, Niacin
History:
Allspice, also called Jamaica pepper, Kurundu, Myrtle pepper, pimento, or newspice, is a spice which is the dried unripe fruit of the Pimenta plant. The term allspice was coined by the English who thought it combined the flavour of several aromatic spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Ground allspice is not, as some people believe, a mixture of spices. Rather, it is the dried fruit of the Pimenta plant. Volatile oils found in the plant contain eugenol, a weak anti microbial agent and also have anaesthetic properties.
It is traditionally used to ease joint pain especially in the knees. Allspice is also purported to provide relief for indigestion and gas. Indeed, eugenol is used by dentists as a local anaesthetic and antiseptic for teeth and gums. Herbalists and naturopaths use allspice to treat nervous exhaustion, flatulence, indigestion, and diarrhoea. A tea is brewed from the leaves and the berries are powdered and added to medicines to improve or disguise the taste. Allspice is used in a liniment to treat chest infections and muscular aches and pains. Bandages are infused with allspice and sold commercially to relieve sprains and muscular aches and pains.
